History: The album was put together by Cuban band leader Juan De Marcos Gonzalez and American guitarist Ry Cooder with other Cuban musicians. Interestingly, the album and band name is attributed to a music scene that was a popular club in the 40's and 50's, and most the people working on the album performed there during the time. The album is a critical success with it making the best of on several lists. It also achieved Billboard success as well at the time of it's release.
Vocals: Well there are some vocals on this album, and where they do appear they fit in great, and add to the vibe of the album. They move with the instrumentals well too, so you get the full effect of all the movement taking place in the album. Also, the album is spoken in Spanish, but that's not going to ruin the emotions and enjoyment of the album if you speak another language, because the music does a great job at conveying everything through how the band expresses themselves.
Instrumentals: The instrumentals are made up of some of the funnest instruments to listen to. You have everything from the brass arrangement, and then with the drumming. It makes for a great rhythm in many of the songs. There are some slower songs that have a more serious sound, but I do prefer the more lively ones to those. It just puts me more in the atmosphere that the album has established for me when I first started listening to the album.
Recording: The album was impressively recorded in only six days. With that many people getting together, and also needing an interpreter it's impressive how quickly they put the album together. Since one guy was American and the rest were Cuban there was a language barrier even when recording. What they came up with was a classic sounding album that stands the test of time.
This is a great album for those that love Latin music, or want to try it out. It features a lot of different flavors of sounds that are fun to listen to. You can hear each piece of the arrangement and hear the movement and enjoyment of recording the album as well. It's a creative endeavor that shows people getting together who want to make music.
